IBS Gave Tribute to Graduating Class of 2012

The Institute of Biological Sciences (IBS) in partnership with UP Cell Biological Society (UP Cells) conducted the annual Testimonial ceremony for graduating BS Biology, BS MST major in Biology, and Graduate School students last April 27, 2012 at NCAS Auditorium, UPLB.

The program started with a prayer followed by the singing of the National Anthem. Dr. Damasa Macandog, director of IBS gave a short message afterwards. In her speech, she challenged each of the graduating students to remain true to whatever the Institute has imparted to them and use it in helping resolve the crisis that the country is facing nowadays. Moreover, she said that as we are continuously facing the Age of Technology, we are also entering the "Age of Biology" and that the latest tools such as scanning microscopes, bioinformatics, PCRs and more may be their weapons in their future careers in life.

Then, each of the five divisions (Animal Biology-Zoology and Wildlife Biology, Environmental Biology, Genetics and Molecular Biology-Cell and Molecular Biology and Genetics, Microbiology, and Plant Biology) of the Institute, together with the BS MST major in Biology and Graduate School programs recognized their graduating students as well as the faculty members and staffs, introduced by the respective heads.

A short audio-visual presentation prepared by UP Cells followed. In the presentation, memories from the graduating students' four or more years of stay in the university particularly at the Insitute of Biological Sciences were reminisced. Laughters filled the auditorium as students looked back once again to their past experiences in courses such as BIO150, MCB 1, and PHYS 3. Ms. Faith Maranan, instructor in the Environmental Biology Division rendered an inspiring song for the graduating students afterwards.

The highlight of the ceremony was the awarding of the outstanding and honor students. The Institute produced two Magna Cum Laude and 14 Cum Laude this year with Angelo Augusto Sumalde, Cell and Molecular Biology major, as the Institute's Class Valedictorian. (other awardees, to follow)

Sumalde, being the Class Valedictorian delivered an inspirational message. In his speech, he said that he strived hard to earn whathever he has received now challenged by the fact that both his parents are well-known faculty members of the University. Being a total geek as he said, he related his life in UPLB as a cell being differentiated to perform a specific function.

The mother of the IBS Class Salutatorian, Rheo Gaspar, Zoology major,  also delivered a short message. She said that graduation is not only a moment for the graduates but is more momentous for parents and teachers who strived hard to raise and educate them.

The event ended in a short message from Dr. Vachel Gay Paller, IBS Deputy Director follwed by the singing of UP Naming Mahal. (Jonathan Austria)
